About the Book
Rice (Oryza sativa) is a popular staple food consumed by more than half of the world’s population. In India, it is extensively cultivated in almost all the States and Union Territories. In order to feed the growing population rice production needs to be boosted nearly 30% by the year 2030. Rice productivity is under constant threat by biotic and abiotic factors. The management of abiotic stresses like flood, drought, salt is of lesser consequences because of their erratic & unpredictable nature. While the management of biotic stresses, particularly crop diseases are of greater consequences and thus adopting right strategies to manage the biotic stresses is the only feasible means to improve the rice productivity. Further, appropriate management of crop diseases largely depends of timely diagnosis of the diseases. In recent years various digital media or apps provide information on disease appearances but still farmers deprive of the requisite information due to lack of network and connectivity issues to support these apps. Keeping this in view, Indian Phytopathological Society (IPS) thought of bringing disease compendium of important crops that will serve as a hand-ready reference documents for appropriate identification of the diseases. In this direction, this compendium focuses on rice diseases. Here we discuss the major diseases of rice with brief illustrations on geographical origin, distribution & crop losses, symptoms, causal organism(s) with key characteristics, disease cycle and favourable conditions, management and selected references. The key symptoms are described using original field captured photographs to provide actual scenario of the diseases. The diseases covered include bacterial blight (Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae), bacterial leaf streak (Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola), blast (Magnaporthe grisea), brown spot (Drecheslera oryzae), false smut (Ustilaginoidea virens), bakane (Fusarium spp.), sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani), bacterial panicle blight (Burkholderia glumae), sheath rot (Sarocladium oryzae), stem rot (Sclerotium oryzae), yellow dwarf (Mycoplasma like organism), rice tungro (rice tungro virus-RTBV, RTSV) & nematode diseases of rice . The management of these diseases are discussed with strategies involving cultural, biological and chemical means that has been validated under Indian conditions. We have taken utmost care in compiling and editing this rice disease compendium with minimum inadvertent typographical errors. The usefulness of this compendium however will be judged by the users/readers/stakeholders especially through their timely adoption in the disease management of rice.
