Prof. L.V. Gangawane Young Scientist Award - Guidelines

1. Introduction

The Prof. L. V. Gangawane Young Scientist Award has been instituted by the Indian Phytopathological Society (IPS), New Delhi, through a generous endowment from Ms Mahi Gangawane, to commemorate the legacy and contributions of Late Prof. L. V. Gangawane, Former President of IPS. The award aims to recognize and encourage outstanding contributions of young scientists in the field of Plant Pathology and allied disciplines.

 

2. Objectives

  • To promote excellence in research in Plant Pathology and related areas.
  • To recognize promising young scientists for their significant contributions.
  • To encourage innovative research addressing emerging challenges in crop health management.

 

3. Nature of the Award

The award shall consist of:

  • A cash prize (Rs. 25,000) (the accrued interest of the endowment).
  • A memento and certificate.
  • TA and DA will be given to the awardee.
  • The Accommodation and Registration fee for the conference will be borne by the awardee.
  • An invitation to deliver the Award Lecture.
  • Felicitation during the IPS Annual Meeting and National Symposium of the Society.
  • Publication of the Award Lecture in the Society’s journal Indian Phytopathology (subject to editorial review).

 

4. Frequency and Scope

  • The award shall be delivered annually in the Zonal Symposium of the respective zones from which the awardee is selected.
  • It shall be open to all eligible candidates across all zones of the Society.

 

5. Eligibility Criteria

  • The applicant must be a Life member of the Indian Phytopathological Society.
  • The age of the applicant should not exceed 35 years as on 31st December of the award application year.
  • The applicant should have made notable research contributions in Plant Pathology or allied fields.
  • The work carried out in India will be given preference.

 

6. Application & Selection Procedure

  • The Society will invite applications for the award from the eligible members of the Society.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Applications received will be scrutinised by a Screening Committee (SC) and then recommended by the Award Recommendation Committee (RC) constituted by the Executive Council (EC) of the Society.
  • Members of the E.C., R.C. and SC will not be eligible for the award.
  • After the acceptance of the recommendations from the Recommendation Committee of the Executive Council of the Society, the award shall be announced in the General Body for final approval.

 

7. Award Lecture

  • The awardee shall deliver the Prof. L. V. Gangawane Award Lecture at the Zonal Symposium of IPS corresponding to the zone of the awardee.
  • The lecture will also be featured during the IPS Annual Meeting/National Symposium through felicitation.
  • The awardee shall submit the Award Lecture manuscript to Indian Phytopathology before the presentation/delivery of the Award Lecture. The manuscript will be considered for publication, subject to the journal’s editorial policies and peer-review process.

 

8. Administration of the Endowment

  • The endowment fund shall be maintained as a permanent corpus by IPS.
  • Only the interest accrued from the fund shall be utilized for:
    • Award components (memento, cash prize, TA/DA etc.).
    • Administrative expenses related to the award, if any.
  • The principal amount shall remain intact in perpetuity.

 

9. Implementation

  1. The award shall be instituted from the year 2026, after completion of all formalities.
  2. The call for nominations shall be announced through the IPS website, newsletter, and other appropriate channels.

 

10. General Conditions

  • The decision of the Society regarding selection shall be final and binding.
  • If no suitable candidate is found in a given year, the award may be withheld.
  • Any dispute arising shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the Society.
  • The Society reserves the right to modify the guidelines from time to time with due approval.
