Research
Areas: Plant
Pathology with specialization bacterial T3SS-effector biology, host-pathogen
interactions, genomics, and plant disease management.
Significant scientific contributions to plant pathology: Dr.
Kalyan is an internationally acclaimed plant pathologist whose pioneering
research has advanced the molecular understanding and sustainable management of
devastating bacterial diseases of crops. He elucidated Type 3 Secretion System
(T3SS)-effectors mediated host–pathogen interactions in bacterial blight of
rice caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and
pomegranate blight caused by Xanthomonas citri pv. punicae (Xcp).
He deciphered complete T3SS-effector repertoires of both pathogens and identified
the principal virulence determinants—XopF and XopR in Xoo, and XopC2,
XopL, and XopN in Xcp. Further, his group demonstrated that targeted
silencing of their cognate host-interactors confers enhanced resistance. He
pathotyped Xoo race-4, a widely prevalent and highly virulent Indian
population, and employed it in screening programmes that facilitated the development
of seven bacterial blight–resistant rice varieties carrying xa13 and Xa21
genes, reinforcing national food and nutritional security. His translational
innovations include a patented nano-copper formulation for eco-friendly blight
management and a licensed PCR-based diagnostic kit enabling rapid and reliable
detection of pomegranate blight. Through scientific leadership, academy
fellowships, and sustained translational impact, Dr. Kalyan’s career
exemplifies excellence, innovation, and transformative service to plant
pathology and Indian agriculture.
